Note - this page is the work of Scott Perkins and the WebMouse thanks Scott for his continued help... thanks Scott! Great Job!

Our Savior Lutheran Church's landscaping project was taken on in 2005, by our membership, to provide a more attractive environment for visitors, community, and members. Protection of our church's expansive slopes from erosion in our coastal marine weather made it a practical requirement.

Maintenance of the landscaping, including over 18 color spot, or planter areas, is done by our membership volunteers. Our ladies also provide snacks and lunches for our work parties. Angell Job Corps youth provide help for the really heavy jobs. Jerry White, of White's Landscaping provides volunteer consulting for our project and plants on a cost plus delivery basis. Our Lincon PUD donates the vast quantities of chips for the landscaped slopes.

This year our Landscaping Committee has introduced an "Adopt a Spot" plan that allows our church members to adopt a color spot/planter area and provide the unique colors and planting materials for each individual area. Pruning and the year end cleanup is done by the adoptor. A guideline is provided for adoptors:

ADOPT A COLOR SPOT

Landscaping Maintenance Plan

Our churchs yearly landscaping maintenance costs can be reduced significantly if church members Adopt a Color Spot. The landscaping objective is to help make our church more attractive to our members, community, and visitors.

ADOPTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

PreEaster - weeding, dead plant removal & replacement, cleanup as required.(The landscaping committee will do Casron <weed preventer>, mulch & fertilizing)

Summer - light weeding, pruning, and nipping of dead flowers.

Fall & Winter - dead plant topping or pruning (Casron, mulch & fertilizing will be done by the landscaping committee).

Please remember to obtain your substitute or replacement if you are unable to do the work.

GUIDELINES - HOW TO DO IT

We are looking for the adopters individual color preferences and look in each of the color spots. Each color spot area typically has one or two topiary in its back area (as you face it from the parking lot). The color spots will need yearly addition or replacement of a combination of mostly perennials and a few annuals. In order for the automatic sprinkler system to water properly, just place the lower growing plants in the front part of the color spot area (as you face it from the parking lot). Progressively taller plants on the sides and to the rear of the color spot.

Remember we have lots of wind. So plants like geraniums and tulips or ones that grow much over 2 ft. tall can have a real wind whip and/or evaporation rate problem.

RECOGNITION and/or MEMORIUM

Small Placards (~3in. x 8in.) will be placed in each Color Spot or Garden area to indicate its adopter and/or memoriam, with the permission of the adopters.
